A message to school counsellors from Stephanie Parker-Huskinson, UVic Student Recruitment Officer:

Happy June Counsellors!

It has been a whirlwind these past few months.  Thank you for all your hard work supporting students and helping them navigate this strange time.  Our Recruitment team has been very busy answering student inquires, offering virtual meetings with applicants, newly admitted students and prospective students, hosting registration workshops and planning for the fall term.  All admitted students have received communication from President Cassels regarding course delivery in the fall term and we continue to update students, parents and counsellors through the COVID-19 response website.

Here are some updates from the past few weeks:

Admissions

- We are not offering January deferrals. Deferrals will still run for an entire year, September to September. However, students can request an entry point change from September 2020 to January 2021 by contacting their admission assistant before August 1. The admission assistant will then consult with the admission officer to determine type of student, faculty/program, the reason why the student is requesting the change (what their plans for the fall are), etc. It will be a case-by-case basis, and students will start the process by contacting their admission assistant.

- Regular deferrals are available.  Students can email deferral@uvic.ca by August 1.

Registration

- The preliminary winter session timetable (September to April) is now available. The final timetable will be available in early June (on or as close to June 8 as possible) and will include information on the course's instructional method—online, face-to-face or a mix—for fall. We expect registration to open June 22, 2020.  Students will receive an email with their assigned date and time for course registration.

- June 3 is the last day of Reg 101 webinars.  A recorded video will be posted next week.  Students can also access course registration video tutorials and resources online.  Students can also find the Reg 101 workbook online, this includes a blank timetable template.

Residence

- On-campus housing will be available in September for first-year students through a priority lottery.  For full details and updates, please reference the COVID response website for on-campus housing.

- All students who applied for Residence received an email outlining their options for the fall term.  If students wish to withdraw their housing application, they can do so by June 12 and receive a refund of their $50 application fee.

Summer Programs

- New!  UVic is introducing a peer-support engagement program that will pair new students with upper-year UVic students. The senior students will help you transition to the university and learn how to navigate academic life. You'll have opportunities to engage in an active online student community, with access to social platforms that enable you to interact with other students socially and academically.  All newly admitted students will be notified in early July about the program.

- Online Pre-Arrival Program will begin in July.  All students will receive an email outlining the program, expectations to complete and prize incentives.

Campus Tours

- Campus tours have been cancelled through June.  Registration remains open for tours in July 2020, but future tours may be cancelled. Tour participants will be notified by email if and when tours are cancelled.

- We have a

for students who are unable to visit campus.

New Application Cycle – 2020/2021

Application deadlines have changed for the upcoming admission cycle.  All programs will have the same deadline of January 31 for the September 2021 entry term.  Deadlines for supplemental applications will be updated by the fall term.

PSBC and CUE

- Counsellors will receive communication from PSBC regarding the fall recruitment season.  As your planner, I will be reaching out before the end of June to discuss your visit.

- The CUE executive will be meeting this week to make a decision about the fall tour.  An email will be sent to all counsellors on the CUE mailing list.

If you have made it this far in my email, congrats!  I know that was a lot of updates, but I think it is important to keep you informed.  Newly admitted students have received various communications about the above programs and services.

Please reach out if you have any questions.

Cheers,
