Island View Place prides itself on providing seniors with exceptional health and home care wrapped up in the beauty of our community. For our staff we offer a culture of mutual respect, and proper staff support with on-going opportunities for continuing education, training and professional development.

We are a tight knit team looking for the next person to join us. This position will prep and cook home style meals for our 19 residents. Although you will wear multiple hats this is not a high stressed kitchen. This role can be filled by an experienced cook who has previous experience in a care home setting or a person who loves home cooking and would like to extend their joy of cooking to others. Full training will be provided.

This role also oversees the cleanliness of the kitchen, upholds food safe regulations, washing dishes, and setting the dining room table.

We have a set menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner to meet our residents’ dietary needs.

Position Overview and Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for meal preparation and upholds our exemplary food services that provide our residents and at times, their visitors with quality meals and a warm-homey dining experience
  • Under the direction of the Chef, ensures the meals and snacks being served are nourishing and varied
  • Prepare meals in accordance with standardized recipes and a rotating menu plan
  • Maintains the kitchen including receiving and storing meats, poultry, fresh vegetables, fruits and staples
  • In the absence of the Chef, checks food orders for completeness and follows inventory control procedures for the storage of fresh and frozen food stuffs and dry goods
  • In the absence of the Chef, ensures all staff involved in meal service follow safe food handling procedures
  • Demonstrates safe food handling protocols, policies and procedures while preparing, serving, clearing tables and washing dishes following meals to provide a safe and positive dining experience for residents and their guests
  • Maintain safe working conditions at all times
  • Ensures all food safety procedures are strictly adhered to at all times according to sanitary regulations
  • Maintains all temperature, cooking and sanitation logs
  • Monitors and report equipment shortages and breakdowns
  • Monitors food waste and shortages
  • Other duties as required

Position requirements:

  • Experience in volume food preparation as a prep or line cook preferably in a restaurant environment
  • Formal culinary training is an asset
  • Valid Food Safe Certificate – Level 1
  • Solid understanding or ability to be trained in customer centered service consistent with the intent and philosophy of assisted living and in support of exemplary service delivery
  • Knowledge of inventory control and food storage procedures an asset
  • Ability to organize and prepare nutritious and appealing meals with minimal supervision and under the direction of the Chef, respond to the changing needs and preferences of resident
  • Knowledge of or ability to be trained in provincial health, sanitation and safety regulations
  • Works well independently
  • Flexible schedule to cover shifts
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Computer literate
  • Organized with solid time management skills

Salary: $20.00-$23.00 per hour

Experience:

  • Cooking: 1 year (preferred)

License/Certification:

  • Food Safe, SafeCheck, Food Handler or equivalent (preferred)
