Position Overview:

Seeking two passionate and experienced teacher assistants to work with our artistic director and to work on three incredible Musical Theatre summer camps at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney, BC. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: planning and leading dance and acting warm-ups and games, choreographing ensemble routines, and assisting the director with rehearsals, and keeping campers focused and engaged, as well as providing guidance, fun and mentorship to campers ranging in ages 7-17. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in various dance styles, specifically jazz and tap, as well as experience working with children, and a love for musical theatre.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and Lead Dance warm-up exercises: Develop age-appropriate dance warm-up routines that align with the camp's chosen musical. Lead daily warm-up exercises for campers, focusing on technique, choreography, and performance skills.
  • Lead Acting Games: Lead and engage campers in a variety of group acting games enhance focus, team-work, group connection, character-development, projection, storytelling and confidence building.
  • Choreograph Ensemble Routines: Create original choreography for the camp’s chosen musical. Adapt choreography to suit the abilities and interests of campers while ensuring a high-quality end result.
  • Provide Instruction and Feedback: Offer clear instruction and demonstrations to campers, helping them improve their dance skills and performance abilities. Provide constructive feedback and encouragement to support growth and development.
  • Collaborate with Staff: Work closely with the camp's artistic director to create the camp’s chosen musical. Integrate activities, run lines, rehearse scenes and ensure a positive overall experience for campers.
  • Supervise Campers: Maintain a safe and supportive learning environment for campers during rehearsals. Supervise campers during breaks and transitions, ensuring their well-being and engagement.
  • Promote Positive Values: Serve as a role model for campers, embodying values of teamwork, creativity, and respect. Foster a positive and inclusive camp culture where campers feel supported and inspired to learn, grow, support one another in their roles and shine.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience teaching dance or musical theatre.
  • Previous experience and/or involvement in a musical production.
  • Proficiency in a variety of dance styles, including jazz, ballet, tap, and musical theatre dance.
  • Strong choreography skills and the ability to create engaging routines for diverse groups of campers.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with children and build rapport with campers and colleagues and give feedback.
  • Patience, enthusiasm, and a genuine passion for working with young people and fostering their creativity and self-expression.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, in a team and a fast paced environment and adapt to the needs and dynamics of a summer camp setting.
  • Criminal Record Check (required).

Working Conditions:

  • This position is based at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney, and will be held in studio rooms, as well as the Charlie White Theatre, which is part of the Centre.
  • Staff training and team building, one week before first camp begins.
  • Work hours are 9am-4pm, Monday-Friday, including the performance of the musical on the second Friday evening of each camp.
  • Physical requirements include dancing, choreography, leading warm-ups and games, DIY costume design and interacting with campers for extended periods.

Job Type: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 2 months

Salary: $18.00-$21.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 – 40 per week
